FERNANDO BOTERO


Fernando Botero was born on April 19, 1932  in Medellin, Colombia. He studied at the National  University of Colombia and at the Royal Academy of fine arts of San Fernando, where he was also a teacher. He has represented periods of art such a contemporary and modern art, and represents figurative art, allegory, and self-painting.

Botero in 1944 attended the bullfighting school in the "de la Macarena" square and in this period he created his first painting: a watercolor of a bullfighter.


            He made illustrations for a local newspaper "El Colombiano" with which he financed his studies.






He finished his studies at the Antioquia Univesity Lyceum. Later he studied sculpture in Pietra Santa, and painting studies in Paris, New York and Monte Carlo.

He lived in Tolù, where he dedicated himself to painting in the pension of Insolina García. When he returned to Bogotá with the oil painting "frente al mar", he obtained 2nd place at the IX National Salon of artists.

Finally, in 1962 in EE.UU made his first exhibition, and 1969 in Paris, and he received widely positive reviews. Botero with his works and paintings created a new art form: BOTERISMO. Won different awards such us "Cruz de Plata de la Orden de Boyacá"
